Why Does a New Home Still Feel Temporary?

Why Does a New Home Still Feel Temporary?

How to Furnish a New Home and Make It Truly Yours

A new home may have furniture, appliances and everything needed for daily life, yet still feel temporary. Usually, no single object is missing. What is missing is a sense of use, habit and recognition.

After moving, many people wait until they have more time, a larger budget or clearer ideas before they truly begin. In the meantime, they live in a home that works but does not yet welcome them.

Functional does not mean familiar

Function solves immediate needs. A table provides a place to eat, a bed to sleep and a lamp to see. Feeling at home also requires subtler signals: a place to leave your keys, a light that accompanies the evening and a detail that does not feel as though somebody else chose it.

You do not need to decorate every wall. You need to give shape to a few moments in your day.

The entrance can say “you have arrived”. The table can become the place where breakfast happens. A shelf can hold objects that already have meaning.

Where to begin

Choose one everyday scene that currently feels incomplete.

Instead of “I need to finish the house”, think “I want coming home to feel less impersonal” or “I want to invite someone over without feeling as though I still live among boxes”.

Then work with three elements: a focal point, a material and a personal trace.

A vase with a branch can add height to an entrance. A flower arrangement can introduce texture to a surface. An artificial plant can provide a lasting presence in a room without enough light for a living plant.

These solutions do not replace life inside the home. They make it more visible.

They also have limitations: artificial greenery does not grow, dried flowers do not smell like fresh ones and a decorative object cannot fix a space with poor circulation or lighting.

My Flower’s advice: start with greenery

When a home is still quite empty, greenery is one of the simplest ways to give it presence without furnishing every area.

A large artificial plant can define a corner of the living room. A decorative branch can add height to a console or entrance. A small arrangement can complete a shelf, table or bedside cabinet.

There is also a practical advantage: you can choose dimensions, shapes and colours to suit the space without depending on natural light or the care required by a living plant.

Our advice? Do not fill the space. Define it.

One carefully designed arrangement in a strategic place is better than many small elements scattered without a common thread.

Three My Flower ideas to get started

1. The entrance

Choose a console, a vase and a branch tall enough to create a vertical focal point.

It is one of the first things you see when entering and can instantly change the perception of the space.

2. An empty corner

Do not assume that you need another piece of furniture.

A large vase with an artificial plant or branch arrangement can transform an unused corner without making it feel heavy.

3. The table

A low arrangement, a distinctive vase or a few branches can make the table more personal without preventing everyday use.

Materials also make a house feel like home

The way a room feels depends on more than colour.

Glass and ceramics, wood, fabrics and natural materials introduce different textures and help remove the “newly furnished house” effect.

Ribbons, branches, artificial flowers and small decorative elements can also personalise a space without changing its structure.

The first step is small

Do not wait until the entire home is finished.

Choose one corner and make it consistent with the way you want to live in it.

Familiarity does not arrive all at once. It is built through repeated gestures.

A vase you notice every morning, a branch that welcomes you at the entrance, an arrangement on the table. These are small details, but over time they become part of the home.

Bring your spaces to life. One corner at a time.
